The Trials of Jesus

There have been many famous trials throughout history. Encyclopedia Britannica listed several famous trials that they considered “trials of the century!” Some of them included the trial of Galileo, OJ Simpson, as well as the impeachment and trial of President Bill Clinton.

In the hours before Jesus’ crucifixion, he would go on trial before two groups of individuals. First, Jesus would appear before the Jewish religious leaders. Second, he would go before the Roman civil leaders. Below is a breakdown of the trials of Jesus in chronological order.

• Jewish Religious Trials - John 18:12–14; Matt 26:57–68; Matt 27:1–2

• Roman Civil Trials - John 18:28–38; Luke 23:6–12; John 18:39–19:6

Although Jesus was found not guilty in all these trials, he would still be sentenced to death by crucifixion.

“For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.” 1 Peter 3:18
