Salt is something that most people are familiar with. Typically, we think of it as being used to add flavor to food. Did you know that it also has other uses? Reader’s Digest lists 12 facts about salt including its use in the Bible.[1]

As Jesus concluded the Beatitudes, he used salt as a metaphor to describe believers and how we should influence the world. In those days, salt was used to season food but was primarily used to help hinder decay in food. Sometimes it was also gathered along with other things such as sand. When this occurred, the original intent of the salt was gone.

One of Jesus’ points was that the believer loses their purpose and influence when it reflects the world rather than Christ. Instead of reflecting the world, believers are to reflect Christ which will bring good into a decaying world. Periodically we need to ask ourselves if are acting like “salt” or “salt mixed with the world”?

“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16 NASB 95)

Blessings,

Pastor Steven
