With the Help of Our Lord

There are numerous examples of projects that took an extremely long time to complete, often due to their complexity, scale, or unexpected challenges. The construction of the International Space Station (ISS) started in 1998 and involved numerous space shuttle flights and assembly missions. It took more than a decade to complete the construction of this complex facility.[1]

The book of Nehemiah “completes the history of the restoration of the returned remnant from exile in Babylon, a restoration begun under Ezra’s leadership.”[2] One of Nehemiah's major accomplishments was the construction of the walls in Jerusalem (see Nehemiah 1:3; 2:17). Despite many setbacks and enormous opposition, the walls only took 52 days to complete once the actual construction began. In Nehemiah 6:15-16, when it was completed, we find that the people did not complete this on their own, but with the help of the Lord.

“Rather than bragging about his human achievement…Nehemiah trumpeted what all the nations perceived that this work was done by God. Disheartened enemies are a sign that God has been at work.”[3]

When we face a difficult task while serving the Lord, we must remember that the Lord will help us, too. However, we must remain faithful to the Lord continuing to do what he asks us to do no matter the opposition. In our strength and wisdom, we will not be able to finish the work. Yet, when we place our trust in the Lord, He not only empowers us but also allows others to see Him working in and through us.

“The best answer to opposition is to keep working and fulfill God's will; thus others will see God's power.”[4]

“So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:6 NKJV)
