It is not uncommon for people to feel inadequate. Sometimes we may feel this way at school, work, as a parent, or because of any number of things. While we typically think of this feeling as affecting only ordinary people, many heroes of the Christian faith felt this way, too.
Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 3:5 that he recognized his inadequacy to be an apostle and servant of the Lord. The Oxford Dictionary defines inadequate as “lacking the quality or quantity required; insufficient for a purpose.” Paul knew that he did not have the power or ability to serve the Lord on his own. Instead, Paul understood that God made him sufficient to serve in ministry.
“The power for his ministry did not come from within, but from above.”[1]
“Whatever adequacy or sufficiency he and his companions possessed was not the product of their own ability or origination. Adequacy for the task had come from God.”[2]
Although we may struggle sometimes with the feeling of inadequacy, we must remember that it is the Lord who makes us able to serve Him (see also 2 Corinthians 4:7-15; 12:7-10). It is the Lord who graciously makes us adequate to fulfill what He has for our lives.
