This weekend in the United States we celebrate July 4th. This special holiday remembers the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. As we approach this week, I thought it would be interesting to reflect on what some U.S. presidents have said about the Bible.
“The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were … the general principles of Christianity.” John Adams (1797-1801)
“The first and almost the only book deserving of universal attention is the Bible. I speak as a man of the world…and I say to you, ‘Search the Scriptures.’” John Quincy Adams (1825-1829)
“That Book, sir, is the Rock on which our Republic rests.” Andrew Jackson (1829-1837)
“In regard to this Great book, I have but to say, it is the best gift God has given to man. All the good the Savior gave to the world was communicated through this book. But for it we could not know right from wrong.” Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865)
Take some time this week to thank the Lord not only for the freedoms we have but also for His eternal Word the Bible.
“The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.” (Psalm 119:160 NKJV)
Blessings,
