The Goodness of the Lord

In times of trial and difficulty, we need to remember to trust in the Lord’s character as revealed in His Word. One of the places that we can turn to is the prophet, Nahum. Nahum prophesied to Nineveh regarding judgment that was about to come upon them. Although much of the three chapters of the book deals with judgment, Nahum 1:1-8 provides us with “a magnificent description of the character of God.”[1]

In addition to the Lord’s wrath, justice, etc., Nahum indicates that the Lord is also good (see also Ezra 3:11; Ps. 100:5; Rom. 11:22). One characteristic of Jesus’ earthly ministry is that he too was good. In Acts 10:38, Peter reminds us that Jesus “went about doing good.” Because one aspect of God’s character is goodness, we can find safe refuge in Him during times of difficulty.

“The Lord is ever and always good (and oh, how good!) and infinitely holy. He is the refuge and fortress for the troubled one in the hour of crisis.”[2]

When you and I encounter the trials and difficulties of this life, we too must remember to trust in the Lord’s character. God’s Word reveals that He is good and will care for those who trust in Him.

Blessings,

Pastor Steven
