To go the extra mile means to do more than we are required. This expression is often associated with customer service and going above and beyond what is needed. This can also be done on an individual level by listening to a friend in need or volunteering your time when it is not convenient.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches his disciples to go the extra mile even for those who have wronged them.[1] Instead of seeking revenge or retaliation, Jesus encourages his followers to reflect grace, mercy, forgiveness, and being willing to suffer injustice. Rather than striking back or seeking repayment, followers of Christ are encouraged to endure loss and refuse to harm others. Additionally, they should willing go the second mile when asked to only go one.
“Ordinary etiquette in those days demanded that one go a mile to direct or guide a bewildered or belated traveler. Grace goes the second mile.”[2]
Seeking revenge can take many forms, but as disciples of Christ, we are called to leave justice in the hands of the Lord and not take matters into our own hands. Romans 12:17-21 emphasizes the importance of not seeking revenge but instead overcoming evil with good. Jesus' teaching challenges us to go beyond what is expected and extend kindness, forgiveness, and compassion even to those who have wronged us. Will you commit to doing this?
