Directing Our Steps

The year 2020 was certainly a year that none of us anticipated. If you are like me, there were many things that I had planned to do that year but did not accomplish because of COVID-19. It also reminded me of passages that tell us that although we may make plans, ultimately “the Lord directs our steps.”

In Proverbs 16:9, Solomon begins by stating that we are all able to make plans for our lives. However, he concludes by stating that the Lord directs the steps of our lives. The word directs “kun” means to establish. This is similar to other passages such as Ps. 37:23, Jeremiah 10:23, and James 4:15.

“Make your plans. But write them on paper, not on concrete. God and life have a way of intruding and leading you on a journey that you might not have anticipated in your wildest dreams”[1]

While you and I should make plans in our lives, we need to remember that the Lord is the one who ultimately guides our steps. We need to take time to pray, study His Word, and then trust the Lord by following wherever He directs us.

Blessings,

Pastor Steven
