Accidental Truth – Part 2

“And they sent their disciples to Him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any.”

Matthew 22:16

In part 1, we discovered two accidental truths about Jesus. We learned them by examining the words of two enemies of the Lord: the Pharisees and the Herodians. Although they themselves were mutual enemies, they plotted together in an attempt to trap the Lord. In doing so, not only were their hearts revealed, but so also was the truth that Jesus was truthful in all His speech. In addition, Jesus does not speculate, offer mere opinions, or alter His message. Instead, He declares God’s way as it truly is. May both be true of us in an increasing way.

The third thing that we discover about Jesus was that He did not defer to anyone. This can also be translated as “You are not concerned about anyone” or “You do not show regard for any person.” They are not suggesting that Jesus was inconsiderate or lacking in empathy. Rather, they are saying that Jesus told the truth regardless of the audience. He not only spoke the truth but remained consistent in doing so. He was unconcerned with whether the other person approved of what He said. What a great lesson for us! We too must not withhold truths that others may need to hear as Paul encourages us in Ephesians 4:15.

"But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ.”[1]

Finally, we learn that Jesus was not partial to anyone. To be partial, or show partiality, simply means to be biased towards something, someone, or show favoritism. One of the characteristics of God is that He is not partial (Romans 2:11). For example, He judges according to truth and righteousness, not appearance or status. In the same way, Jesus is being described as One who does not judge by status, position, or influence. Instead, He evaluates with perfect truth and impartiality. This echoes what we find in Job 34:19.

“[God] Who shows no partiality to princes

Nor regards the rich above the poor,

For they all are the work of His hands?"[2]

Although Jesus has enemies, even they could not help but speak truth about Him. Blessed be the name of the Lord! May we take the four truths, spoken by our Lord’s enemies, to heart. Like the precious Lord Jesus, may our words be filled with truth, not people-pleasing, and without partiality. May others see the Lord Jesus in us in an increasing way each day.

Lord, I confess that I do not always speak in the manner of Christ, my Lord. May both my speech and actions reflect the One who died for me. Amen.
